The Magnolia Public School curriculum provides classroom enrichment opportunities at all grade levels for student to pursue areas of special interests.  Special education classes, gifted and talented programs and speech therapy are available for students throughout the school system.
    The elementary curriculum incorporates a variety of state and nationally recognized instructional programs including Reading Recovery; ELLA; Effective Literacy; Investigations in Number, Data, and Space; and the Connected Mathematics Project.  Teachers have been trained in the K-4 Crusades and the Math and Science Crusades.  Computerized instruction is provided in grades 1-6. 

     ELLA is a comprehensive approach for learning to read and write for students in grades three through five.  Effective Literacy instructional strategies continue learning from the foundation established in ELLA.
 

    Effective Literacy extends the reading and writing learning approach to students through the fifth grade.
 

    Literacy Lab Classroom Project extends the reading and writing comprehensive approach for students beginning in fourth grade through the eighth grade.

    These programs offer standards-based instruction developed after years of research on how children learn mathematics.  Discovering mathematical concepts through investigations aids student to develop flexibility and confidence in approaching mathematics.  Students become fluent in using skills and tools to solve problems and evaluate solutions.  While exploring investigations, students discover many problems have more than one solution.  Students use a variety of manipulatives and technology in their everyday mathematics work.

    The Accelerated Reader program engages students in recreational reading.  The program allows students to select books of their choice and read at their own pace.  A computerized system tests students' comprehension of each book and provides teachers with current information including students' reading level and number of books read.  A reward system recognizes students' achievement.
 

     Students in grades 1-6 attend a computer lab class a minimum of once a week.  Usage of computer skill lessons in the areas of mathematics, language and reading are taught during the class.  The lab setting provides students opportunities to strengthen areas of academic weakness as well as occasions to learn new skills and enrich mastered skills. 
 

    Activity periods for elementary children include physical education and health, choral music, art and library.  A beginner band class is offered to sixth grade students.
