Mission Statement Students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades at Central Elementary School are making transitions academically and socially. The faculty and staff are dedicated to providing the students with a quality education including academics, fine arts, physical education, and character education. The mathematics curriculum of Central Elementary School allows students to develop fluency in using mathematical skills and tools, flexibility and confidence when problem solving, and proficiency in evaluating solutions. Also, students learn various ways of communicating mathematical thinking. The curriculums, Investigations (grades 4-5) and Connected Math (grade 6), provide students with the mathematical understanding necessary to advance to higher-level math courses. Literacy, at Central Elementary School, is developed through a literacy-lab classroom environment using the Reader's and Writer's Workshop concept. Instructional strategies include mini-skill lessons, literature circles, guided reading instruction, and writing using a writer's notebook. Grammar is addressed through student's writings and a daily language activity. A literacy environment, rich with print of various levels and genres and the availability of writing materials, encourages students to become lifelong readers and writers. The Accelerated Reader program encourages students' independent reading and assesses comprehension. Science and social studies classes promote learning about the natural world and of the larger community. In addition to academic subjects, students at Central Elementary School participate in daily activity classes including vocal and instrumental music, art, and physical education. Also, students attend library and computer classes. Character education activities and pep rallies reflect a district-wide character work-of-the-month. Student learning, both academically and socially, is vital to the faculty and staff of Central Elementary School. Please call the school office, if the faculty and staff can be of assistance.
