GUIDELINES IN STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS FOR VOLUNTEERS 1. Recognize each student with whom you work and call him/her by name. 2. Work with students instead of merely supervising them. 3. Be fair and consistent. 4. Be patient and show understanding of the needs of students who may have learning problems. 5. When working with students, be calm and maintain eye contact. 6. Listen to and show respect for the ideas of students and encourage the sharing of opinions. 7. Other points to remember when working with students are: (a) Smile and be complimentary (b) Take time to listen to students (c) Do not make promises you cannot keep (d) Be honest and truthful (e) Be open-minded and optimistic (f) Encourage students to acquire self-discipline
